A husband and wife were attacked and injured, the husband seriously, by their pig at their farm in Townsend Tuesday evening.
Police said they initially responded to the farm on Fitchburg Road just before 6 p.m. after a woman was injured. Shannon Hernandez, 38, was taken to Leominster Hospital with lacerations on her arms and legs. Less than two hours later, at around 7:30 p.m., police said they were called to the same farm after her husband Jose, 50, was attacked by the same animal.
Jose Hernandez was seriously injured and rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center after someone driving by their farm saw him bleeding profusely and called 911. Shannon Hernandez has since been released from the hospital and said her husband is in stable condition after the pig punctured two main arteries in his right hand. He is expected to survive.
Shannon Hernandez said she was separating her 250-pound pig, Boss, from the female pigs at the time of her attack. She said this type of behavior is typical for a male pig, and they can get aggressive and edgy around females in heat. That’s why, she said, she was ready with a shovel at the time of the attack.
Officials have determined the pig will be euthanized Thursday before being tested for rabies.
