Great Barrington Police are investigating a deadly crash between an SUV and a train on Thursday. 

Police responded to Rt. 23 near West Avenue around 1 p.m. 

When officers arrived, they found a Jeep Liberty had been traveling west and approached a grade-level railroad crossing, which had its lights and arms activated, indicating a train was approaching. 

The Jeep apparently struck one of the arms at the crossing and a 14-car freight train operated by the Housatonic Railroad Company struck the car. 

The operator of the Jeep, a 76-year-old man from New York, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The crash in now under investigation.
