A person was killed Friday night after their car crashed and caught on fire in Greenland, according to Greenland police.

Police said they responded to Ocean Road shortly before midnight for reports of a car on fire. When officers arrived, they found the car fully engulfed in flames in the middle of the road.

According to police, it was quickly determined the car had collided with a tree on the north side of the roadway before catching on fire.

After extinguishing the fire, Greenland Fire officials found an unidentified body in the front seat.

Preliminary investigation showed the car was traveling west on Ocean Road before it left the roadway and struck the tree. The unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ocean Road was closed in the area of the crash for about four hours as troopers conducted their investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
