A car was engulfed in flames on I-93 South in Somerville Friday evening.

Crews extinguished the fire and the southbound side of the highway was temporarily shut down. All lanes have been reopened.

Several small explosions occurred due to the fire.

Thick, black smoke was seen raising up and traveling over to the other side of the highway.

Police said the driver was the only person in the car, and he was not hurt.

Somerville Fire said a faulty engine part caused the fire.
