Mark Wahlberg films ‘Patriots Day’ scenes at Boston Marathon

Actor Mark Wahlberg was at the Boston Marathon Monday morning to film scenes for the upcoming movie, "Patriots Day."

The Dorchester native plays a police officer who is on detail during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Wahlberg, in a full Boston Police uniform, was seen filming scenes at the finish line hours before the marathon began. He returned hours later for more filming.

Wahlberg also took part in Patriots Day festivities. He was seen with Mayor Marty Walsh in the North End to watch a reenactment of Paul Revere’s ride.

The film has shot scenes in several locations throughout the region, but some towns have rejected their locations as access for shooting. Wahlberg’s presence at the marathon has been controversial, with some saying it is too soon after the bombing for filming and others suggesting Wahlberg’s presence takes away from the runners and draws security away from the actual marathon.

Director Peter Berg told 7News that he is making a serious effort to be as respectful as possible during the shoot. Wahlberg also stressed this while filming Monday morning.

Further back along the Marathon route, bombing survivor Jeff Bauman and Jake Gyllenhaal threw out the first pitch together before the Red Sox game. Both men received a standing ovation as they walked to the pitcher’s mound. Gyllenhaal will play Bauman in the upcoming movie "Stronger."
