A statue of the Virgin Mary at a Billerica church was found vandalized Wednesday morning, the third time this has happened at an area church in the past week.

Police said a parishioner reported the vandalism to a maintenance worker at St. Mary’s Church on Boston Road. The maintenance worker then contacted police.

The statue, located behind the church, had its hands and head broken off. Police believe the vandalism was done either late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

The vandalism is similar to an incident at St. Margaret’s Church in Burlington, where three statues were decapitated and had their hands broken off Tuesday. The Billerica church is just 4 miles from the Burlington one. Another statue was vandalized with black paint and tagged with graffiti at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Norwood over the weekend.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to contact the Billerica Police Department at 978-667-1212.
