An 18-year-old high school senior died on Wednesday after she was struck by a car in Milton.
A source tells 7News the driver of the car was an off-duty Boston Police officer.
Police say the 44-year-old driver, a Hyde Park man, stayed at the scene.
In a statement, Boston Police said:
Sgt. Hoppie is a twenty year veteran of the Boston Police Department currently assigned to Area E-5 in West Roxbury. He is deeply saddened about the tragic accident and is cooperating fully with the ongoing State Police investigation."
There were no signs the driver was impaired.
The teen is identified as Katelisa Etienne, a senior at Milton High School, according to a statement from the school.
At around 3:30 p.m., Etienne was struck on Brush Hill Road at Aberdeen Road, according to State Police.
Police say Etienne was crossing Aberdeen Road when a Jeep Wrangler struck her. The car attempted to swerve to avoid her, police said.
Etienne was taken to Boston Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Etienne was two blocks from home when she was struck. She had been walking to a program to help other children when she was struck,
Etienne was scheduled to graduate in June.
State Police are investigating the crash. No charges have been filed.
