An Exeter man was arrested for alleged driving under the influence after his involvement in a fatal car crash that killed a teenage girl and injured two others.
According to Rhode Island state police, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle crash on Route 2 south in Exeter Saturday night.
Preliminary investigation revealed a car with four people inside veered to the right of Route 2 and hit a mailbox. The car then veered left and crossed both lanes of travel.
After spinning, the car exited the northbound side of the roadway and hit a utility pole.
State police said speed and alcohol may have been leading factors in the crash.
All four individuals were not wearing seatbelts, and were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.
The front seat passenger, 17-year-old Heidi Malstrom of Coventry was pronounced dead at the hospital.
One backseat passenger, 22-year-old Daniel Duffy of North Kingstown, was ejected from the car and is in critical condition.
The second backseat passenger, 20-year-old Cameron Millar of West Kingstown is suffering from serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The driver, 18-year-old Scott Gavitt of Exeter, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. According to police, Gavitt showed signs of impairment at the scene.
Police arrested Gavitt and charged him with driving under the influence of liquor or drugs resulting in death, driving under the influence of liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury (2 counts), driving so as to endanger resulting in death, and driving so as to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury (2 counts).
Gavitt was arraigned at Rhode Island Hospital and held on $100,000.00 surety bail. He is scheduled to appear at McGrath Judicial Complex April 24 for a pre-arraignment conference.
