A group of people demonstrated outside the Apple store on Boylston Street Tuesday to support the company in its standoff against the FBI.
"People are extremely concerned with the FBI asking Apple to do this," said Evan Greer from the group Fight for the Future. "In this case, it goes beyond a single phone."
The FBI is asking Apple to help them unlock the encrypted iPhone that belonged to Syed Farook. Farook and his wife killed 14 people in a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California back in December. Last week, a federal judge ordered Apple to create software that would help the FBI unlock the phone. Apple refused, saying it would put every iPhone at risk.
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said Apple should work with the FBI because the software could benefit police departments, including Boston’s.
"We have crimes all the time that data from a cellphone is helpful," said Evans. "I have one homicide we can’t get access to a phone. We’re all feeling that on a national level but on a local level too."
Around a dozen people attended the rally in Boston. Across the country, other demonstrations were held at Apple stores.
