A hoverboard sparked a fire inside a Chelmsford house on Monmouth Street Monday night.

Owen Rega, 11, was playing with the hoverboard when he said it started to smoke. Owen’s father told 7News his son heard a pop just before the flames started.

"I was like, oh my gosh, and I just jumped off really quick and grabbed the dog," said Owen. He ran outside with the dog and his older sister Alison called 911.

Firefighters said the hoverboard shot off sparks and melted, causing a fire in the house. The fire was small enough for firefighters to use just a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. The house’s floor was damaged but no one was injured.

Owen’s father said the hoverboard was a Christmas gift and had he known this would happen, he never would have allowed his son to use it.
