Brrr… many towns start below 0 again this morning under a clear sky and light winds. At least the winds are light this morning and not the biting breeze of yesterday.
If you don’t have to roll out of bed and get to school or work today, it’s another great day to take your time getting out the door this morning. If you are up and at em early, winter gear is a necessity once again.
A day removed from Worcester (-16) and Boston (-9) hitting their coldest temps since 1957, it’s hard to believe that we’ll be talking 50s and rain by tomorrow. To get there, it’s a process, and initially I do expect some snow/ice and slick spots this evening. The best chance for some light snow to break out is after 4-5pm, with perhaps a brief period of steadier snow between 7-9pm. After that, warm air aloft bursts in, flipping the snow to sleet and freezing rain. That ice then goes to plain rain after midnight (northwest of 495 after 3am) as milder air warms temps close to the surface above freezing late tonight. Generally, an inch or two of snow is expected with a period of sleet and freezing rain providing some slick spots through midnight. Even when the change to rain happens, the ground is so cold, that icy spots are still likely in the driveway, sidewalks and untreated roads into the predawn hours Tuesday.
By sunrise Tuesday, temperatures are in the 40s and while slick travel conditions are gone, fog will reduce visibility through the morning. By the afternoon, temps jump into the 50s! Fog isn’t as much of an issue in the afternoon, but the winds crank up, gusting past 50mph across eastern Mass in the late afternoon/evening. Showers are scattered tomorrow morning into the afternoon with the best chance of downpours and a crack of thunder moving in late afternoon and evening.
Rain is done by Wednesday, and while seasonably cool air returns by Thursday, the bitter air does not return this week.
