Police shot and killed a man in Dorchester as they were responding to a report of shots fired inside a home.
The incident occurred on near the intersection of Stanwood and Laredo Streets.
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans confirmed in a news conference that one person was killed following an exchange of gunfire with police.
Two other people are suffering from gunshot wounds police say occurred inside a nearby home on Devon Street. Police a man dragged one of the people who was shot inside the house outside where they encountered police. Police say that man pulled a gun on officers, which they say forced them to fire.
Evans said officers repeatedly asked the man to drop his weapon before firing.
Sources say the man killed was 29-year-old and had 57 previous arrests and had previously been shot twice. The man also had three prior convictions for weapons charges, sources say.
Police sources say the incident may have begun as an attempted home invasion.
The two people shot inside the home are at a hospital and are expected to recover.
Rev. Eugene Rivers, a community activist, spoke out about the shooting shortly after.
“There is nothing nice about it, it’s tragic. But the reality is I’ve got a gun, I’m a bad guy, the officer has a gun, the officer is obligated to do what they must do and they did," Rivers said.
