A Northeastern University professor is among five men who were arraigned Friday after allegedly contacting Boston Police detectives in an online prostitution sting.

Two more face arraignment at a later date.

Harvey Shapiro, 62 of Needham, was arrested at the Back Bay Hilton Hotel on Thursday.

He teaches Jewish studies at the university.

Christopher Otero, 24 of Revere; Robert Smith, 74 of Back Bay; Joshua Sternstein, 33 of Boston; and Brad Watkins, 40 of Dorchester were also arrested on Thursday on charges of seeking to engage in sex for a fee.

A 38-year-old Andover man and a 37-year-old Westborough man were also arrested and appeared in court on Friday. They will be arraigned at a later date.

In each case, the defendants allegedly responded to an online advertisement posted by detectives assigned to the Boston Police Human Trafficking Unit and negotiated sexual conduct in exchange for money.

The men were placed under arrest at the locations where they had agreed to meet the undercover detectives.

On Friday, Northeastern University released a statement about Shapiro:

Northeastern University will evaluate the entire set of circumstances around the allegations involving Mr. Shapiro and decide on the appropriate personnel in accordance with our policies.
