An iron workers’ union has become "Ava’s Army" to help support a girl from New Hampshire undergoing cancer treatment.
7News first met Ava Doiron-Frankland back in 2014 when her wish for a pool at her house in Salem, New Hampshire was granted. Her brain cancer has since returned.
To show their support, workers from Local 7 first spray-painted "Ava’s Army" on a beam at Brigham and Women’s, where she is undergoing treatment and they are doing construction.
"She was so excited by it," said Ava’s father, Mike Doiron. "That’s when the workers saw her and they came out and met her and basically fell in love with her right on the spot."
When the beam got covered as the construction work continued, the workers had a better idea to cheer her up. Local 7 put up a big banner at the site proclaiming that they are Ava’s Army. They also put Ava’s Army stickers on their helmets.
"She smiled like it was the best thing ever," said Bill Whalen of Local 7.
Ava still has seven cancer treatments to go. Her father said he will always make sure to drive by the sign so Ava can see her name.
