New designs have been revealed depicting a $1.5 billion project to re-do the Government Center parking garage and surrounding area.

The City of Boston has approved residential and office towers, a project that will begin in Spring 2016.

The development is a multi-phase plan for replacing existing concrete garage with a pedestrian-friendly streetscape, public plaza and mixed-use buildings across two blocks, according to the project’s website.

The project will include an apartment building on New Sudbury Street, which will be the first structure built; followed by an office building on New Chardon Street; and a building on Congress Street that will have apartments or condominiums.

When fully built, there will be 812 housing units, and 196 hotel rooms, place office and retail space.

The remaining garage, which will be enclosed on its three principal sides by the new buildings, will contain approximately 1,159 parking spaces.
