West Bridgewater public schools and Boston’s Emerson College have banned students from bringing hoverboards to school.

Administrators in West Bridgewater said they are concerned about safety. The self-balancing scooters’ batteries run the risk of bursting into flames or even exploding.

"Our concern was they’d be in a locker in the school and catch fire and nobody would see it. We didn’t want that to happen," said West Bridgewater Fire Chief Leonard Hunt.

"I think it’s pretty reasonable," said student Garrett Wilde. "It’s kind of dangerous having people riding hoverboards around the hall."

Emerson College said it is also concerned about hoverboard crashes on its densely-populated city campus.
