An Oklahoma family is upset with a water park after they said their daughter was denied a ride on a waterslide because of her prosthetic leg.
Averie Mitchell, 8, wears a prosthetic after her leg was amputated due to a birth defect. When she and her family were at Frontier City's Wild West Water Works this past weekend, she was about to go down a waterslide when an employee stopped her.
"We were getting ready to go down the slide and the attendant stepped in front of the slide and told Averie you can't go down," said Averie's mother, Kim Mitchell.
Averie and her mother walked back down to speak with the lead attendant, who told them the prosthetic leg could scratch the slide. Her parents claim the water park discriminated against their daughter.
"I was angry, I was upset," said Kim Mitchell. "My child was crying. She thought she had done something wrong."
"I think they absolutely discriminated against her, given the reason that it could scratch their slide," said Averie's father, John Mitchell. "People wear bracelets, watches, rings."
Management claimed the decision was part of their park policy, though the Mitchells said nothing was on any sign or the online regulations.
Frontier City gave the family a full refund on their tickets. The family is now asking for the park to be more clear with their policies.
