The mini heat wave this week is welcome, but before all the icy reminders of this wretched winter melt into memories, I hope there’s some more snow…just enough to make this the snowiest winter ever here.
Two more inches–that’s all we need to claim the record for total snowfall in any Boston winter.
And it’s a place in history we deserve–after all the snow and storms we’ve seen every day for a month.

The record we’re chasing–107.6 inches–was set in the winter of 1995-96. If you were here then, you may remember it differently, but I don’t remember it at all.
I’m sure there was a lot of snow, but I don’t recall it covering every surface for four weeks, or shutting down the T for a month. Because it didn’t.
The Blizzard of 1978 is the worst winter weather I remember and, interestingly, ’78 wasn’t even one of the top five winters in Boston for total snowfall.
But the intensity of the blizzard made it dangerous: 73 people in Massachusetts died, as hurricane force winds stranded thousands on highways, took over the ocean, and caused enormous damage along the coastline.
By comparison, this winter is white, white, white, though by now the snow is fifty shades of gray.
We’ve already gotten over a hundred inches of it, and it feels like a hundred feet.
So what’s another couple of inches? We only need two.
Come on, Mother Nature, give us the record.
We’ve earned it.
