What do candidates need from Tuesday night debate?

Posted: Updated:
This is it!  The last big chance for Martha Coakley's two challengers to catch her.  Debates can change votes.

And if the Democrats want to change some, here's what they should do, and not do, tonight.

She's the leader in every poll, but a 7News / UMass Lowell poll shows her support is soft.

Why?  Because she's short on specifics and avoids taking hard stands.

So her do tonight is go for the bold.  To show every voter in the state where she stands and what she stands for.

Steve Grossman has the endorsements of both Boston newspapers, but not enough endorsement from voters to put him in front.

Tonight, he should try "shock and awe"...to convince voters they need to change their minds.

Don Berwick says he's in it to win it, but no poll says he will.

So, tonight, Berwick should enjoy the moment, make his points, and get ready to move on.

Now, what the Democrats don't want to do:

Martha Coakley should not try to run out the clock.  Instead, she should engage her opponents.

Steve Grossman does not want to be too mean when he criticizes Coakley.  An angry argument can ruin a good point.

And Don Berwick shouldn't get in the way this evening.  If his two opponents tangle, he should let them have at it.

I'll be one of the moderators tonight, and my do is simple:  do everything I can to help you decide whom to vote for next Tuesday.
