American Ebola survivor addresses fight with disease

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WHDH) - American Ebola survivor Nancy Writebol spoke at a news conference on Wednesday, addressing her fight against the disease.

She thanked the doctors who helped save her life and also thanked her family and friends for supporting her every step of the way.

"Those were some very, very dark days," Writebol said of the times after her diagnosis.

She admitted also that at one point, she didn't think she'd survive.

"I had no clue what was going to happen. Of course, I knew what the outcome could be, and yet, there was no fear. There was just a sense of lord's peace and presence with us. I thought whether I live or whether I die, it's going to be okay," Writebol said.

Writebol, 59, contracted Ebola while working with infected patients in Liberia as a missionary, along with her husband. At the clinic in Liberia, Writebol's duties included disinfecting staff entering or leaving the Ebola treatment area.

She stated that she believes an experimental drug, her medical care and her faith helped save her.

She was released from the Atlanta hospital on Aug. 19 and has been spending time with her husband at an undisclosed location. Her husband was quarantined for a week at the SIM campus before being released.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
