Maine girl bikes 101 miles for summer vacation

Posted: Updated:
UNDATED (NBC) - An 11-year-old Maine girl is heading back to school with a sense of accomplishment after accepting her neighbor's bike-riding challenge this summer.

Cassidy Tierney was challenged by a neighbor to ride 101 miles over the summer.

"I said 'Hey Cassidy let's bike 100 miles and she started jumping up and down like a Mexican jumping bean," said neighbor Jim Arsenault.

The first time Arsenault and Cassidy rode together, with her 4-year old brother in tow, they did 12 miles,  about 10 laps around their neighborhood.

"I wasn't really tired, I just wanted to keep on going," Cassidy said.

The pair logged about 12 miles each week. The trek took about two hours to complete. There was no real purpose behind the challenge, no fundraising or fitness issues, it was just for fun. Arsenault feels this is something that is getting lost on the younger generation compared to when he was a kid.

"You rode a bike because it was fun, that was the only reason. It never occurred to me riding my sting ray when I was her age that it was healthy," Arsenault said.

The pair made their goal of 101 miles last week and Cassidy is already planning on doing 201 miles with her friend in the future. She says it will be even more fun next summer with all her friends riding alongside her.

"If she lets me do it, I will do the 201 laps with her next summer, hopefully I will survive," Arsenault said.
