Phil Mickelson thought about staying home in San Diego because of the busy FedEx Cup playoff scheduling leading to the Ryder Cup.
Instead, the five-time major champion showed up at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Thursday and didn’t even warm up before his pro-am round on the TPC Boston.
Mickelson doesn’t like that the FedEx Cup this year features four straight weeks of competition. He also noted that the PGA Tour has no ownership in five of golf’s biggest revenue events — the four majors and the Ryder Cup. Mickelson says he felt it was important to support the FedEx Cup.
But he doesn’t understand why the tour didn’t have a one-week break in the playoffs, and then take a charter from Atlanta after the Tour Championship to Scotland.
