Haverhill police say teen in boat acted alone

Posted: Updated:
HAVERHILL, Mass. (WHDH) - The teen involved in a late night boat accident on the Merrimack River acted alone and no one fell overboard, Haverhill Police said Wednesday morning.

The Haverhill Police department said it appears a 13-year-old boy stole a boat from a River Street dock and reported to police that a 17-year-old acquaintance had stolen the boat.

The teen's story stated that the two were driving the boat near the Route 495 bridge when the older teen fell into the river.

Emergency responders spent several hours searching the Merrimack River near the Methuen and Haverhill town line for a missing teenager Tuesday night, after the younger boy told police he was able to swim to shore.

Police say they searched a 3-5 mile stretch of the river before halting their search at 11 p.m.

After questioning the teen, officials determined that two boys stole the boat, lost power a couple hundred yards from shore and became stranded. One swam back to shore and another waiting until rescue teams arrived.

Police are "confident" that all parties are accounted for, according to a statement.
