TEWKSBURY, Mass. (WHDH) -
A truck driver from New York was in a Massachusetts court Monday, accused of charging at Market Basket protesters while holding a hammer.
Ira Forbes, 27, said he was just trying to do his job, deliver food for Market Basket, when he was targeted by protesters shouting racial slurs at him.
“I'm the victim in this case, I'm being vilified for doing my job,” Forbes said. “I wasn't trying to hurt anyone. I just wanted these guys to know when I started hearing the racial slurs and them calling me out I just wanted to leave.”
Cell phone video shows Forbes being arrested outside Market Basket headquarters in Tewksbury last Friday.
He faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.
He pleaded not guilty and told 7News that he had no idea the workers were on strike.
“I understand these people's frustration, they're out of work, these people have kids and at the end of the days these guys are upset, I'm doing my job,” he said.
Forbes has been ordered to stay away from the Picketers while he is awaiting trial. He is expected to be back in court next month.
