Brockton boy hit by tractor-trailer and killed on birthday

BROCKTON, Mass. (WHDH) - Just hours after a young boy was hit by a tractor-trailer and killed in Brockton, friends and families gathered to mourn his life.

Nazair Nunes-Escobar was rollerblading on his 12th birthday Thursday headed to a friend's house when the crash happened.

“He was a good kid, he was just playing, I don't know how that happened,” Nazair's cousin Elisandra Alves said.

"I just wrote 'RIP Naz' on it. Thought I'd come, drop it off, and pay my respects to a great kid," said Adam Portrait, the boy's baseball coach.

The crash occurred on Battles Street around 3 p.m. The street has houses and apartments on both sides and residents say there is a lot of traffic on that road.

"You hear sirens all the time, I didn't think anything of it until I kinda poked my head out front, and I was like 'oh my god,'" said witness Mary Bowie.

The driver of the 18-wheeler stopped immediately after hitting the boy and investigators spent several hours at the scene before removing the truck.

An equipment violation citation has been issued to South Shore Scrap Metal on Friday. The company has not commented.
