Mom says special needs son was left on school bus

Posted: Updated:
METHUEN, Mass. (WHDH) - A 3-year-old boy with special needs was left behind on the school bus and now his mother wants to know what happened.

Robby is one of many special needs children on the bus, he was supposed to have been checked off by the driver and a bus monitor but after some type of miscommunication he was left there, sleeping while they left.

"I will never forget that day. What could have happened to Robby, he could have died,” Robby's mom Roxanne Vargas said.

Phil Lahey, the bus driver, and the monitor were both fired after the incident. Lahey said there was a lot of confusion that day.

"I've run it a million times in my head but I can't change what happened. Was it her mistake? Was it her responsibility? Yeah. But it was my bus and I'm responsible for it,” he said.

Lahey realized the mistake after about 15 minutes and took Robby home, but that was too little, too late.

"I've apologized to everybody. I'm going to have to live with the mistake the rest of my life,” Lahey said.

Robby's mom said that while she understands it was a mistake it shouldn't have happened.

"Unfortunately, it was a big mistake with my son. It could have cost him his life,” she said.

School officials and the bus company met with Robby's mom and told her they are working to implement a system that forces drivers to check their buses before they leave.
