One killed, others displaced after Revere fire

REVERE, Mass. (WHDH) - The Revere Fire Department confirmed that one person was killed in a 3-alarm fire in four-decker home at 190 Campbell Ave in Revere Saturday evening.

Four firefighters, three from Revere and one from Massport, were injured. The fire started around 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the eight-unit building. The wood frame building was a total loss.

Heavy smoke hung in the air as firefighters attempted to battle the flames. Officials were unsure what caused the fire or where it started. State fire marshals and state troopers provided assistance.

Firefighters attempted to enter the building but had to evacuate because conditions were not conducive to fighting the flames, largely due to the thick smoke.

The battle was expected to be a long task for firefighters because there was no wind to carry out the smoke. It took several hours to put out the flames and all the hot spots.

There is shock and sadness from neighbors who knew the 64-year-old victim.

"We're a very close community. Revere is known for it's close family. To find out that a neighbor passed away, it's sad," said neighbor Claudia Dias.

Two of the firefighters that were injured have been released from the hospital. All are expected to be okay.

The Suffolk County DA's office said there will be an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire, but there was no initial evidence to suggest that it was intentionally set.

The Red Cross is providing assistance for about a dozen people who lived in the building.
