Sources: Market Basket stores will begin cutting hours

Posted: Updated:
TEWKSBURY, Mass. (WHDH) - Market Basket stores will soon be cutting back worker hours to deal with the downturn in sales.

Sources showed 7News an internal memo sent by new CEO Felicia Thornton.

"Store sales volumes are substantially reduced from standard levels. This means you need to schedule staff levels necessary to serve your current customer base," the memo said.

Employees say they have already noticed the reduction in hours.

“I was working 32 hours in the Chelmsford store and this week I got no hours at all,” Kendra McDermott said.

Sources tell 7News that since the boycott began in mid-July sales are down 90 percent.

“They instruct our managers to cut back hours to meet expected sales let me translate that for you, that's the equivalent to 20,000 people being laid off,” Dave McClean, former operations manager for the chain, said.

Employees said they are hoping for a resolution sooner than later but sources tell 7News the board of directors is still negotiating a sale.
