Melrose man charged with impersonating federal agent

Posted: Updated:

A Melrose man accused of impersonating a federal agent appeared in federal court on Friday.

Gjerji Pelushi, 28, was arrested and charged by criminal complaint.

A court affidavit stated that earlier this year, two Albanian victims paid thousands of dollars to Pelushi to assist them in obtaining a law enforcement job or in dealing with a law enforcement problem.

One of the victims had a court case that Pelushi, who is himself Albanian, promised to get dismissed.

According to the victims, Pelushi told them he worked as a plain-clothes officer at the Boston Marathon.

Pelushi had told the victims that he worked for the FBI or the CIA. In recorded calls obtained by undercover investigators, he referred to himself as an agent and confirmed he had taken the money from the victims.

Pelushi was fitted with a GPS monitoring bracelet and forced to surrender his passport because prosecutors said he was a flight risk.
