9-foot alligator captured in Coral Springs neighborhood

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida woman found an unexpected visitor at the front door of her Coral Springs home.

Luann Alonso woke up Thursday morning to a surprise. "Oh, my God are you kidding me? I was petrified!" said Alonso. "I called the non-emergency number because I didn't know what to do."

Alonso said she was about to walk her Miniature Pinscher, Gucci, when she heard a rattling noise outside. "It was nuts. I couldn't believe it," said Alonso.

"I mentioned to her it was probably a raccoon," said her husband. But when she looked outside her window, she spotted the 9-foot alligator.

A local wildlife trapper Kevin Garvey was then called out to the home. Alonso said the alligator tried to fight to avoid capture, but the trapper eventually captured the animal.

It is believed the alligator came from a canal behind her home. Garvey said, "We got a lot of bodies of waters, a lot of lakes, canals. You never know what you are going to run in to."

"I've seen him on the bank in the back, but never in the front yard, and definitely not against my front windows," said Alonso.

Other dog owners were also startled that such a large alligator lurked where their dogs played. Eleven-year-old Wiza usually cools off by jumping into the back canal and sometimes jumps in to chase down raccoons. Her owner describes her as fearless but is now worried. "It's a little concerning because they will eat our little dogs if we don't get them under control," said neighbor Mike Rump.

Garvey had the alligator under control and in the back of his truck before sunrise. The alligator will be taken to an Everglades outpost or to a farm in Okeechobee.
