MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- Officers have teamed up with the family of a teen who was shot and killed in a South Florida neighborhood.

On Wednesday night, more than 40 officers returned to the scene where 16-year-old Zamari Pierre Louis was shot and killed on Jan. 15. Miami Gardens Police, including Chief Stephen Johnson, handed out flyers in the area of 15941 N.W. 18th Ave. to raise awareness of a cold case they are desperately trying to solve. "It is a good thing that they are doing this, and I am so grateful that they did pick my son," said Sherita Small who's son was murdered. "You know to come out here on the scene, and I feel like it was needed and that's important because he was, he was that important in our lives."

Louis was returning home from a trip to the store just before 8 p.m. when shots were fired. Louis was shot and killed on a nearby by lawn. "We didn't even hear a car or anything. We just heard the shots," said Janie Brunson who heard the gunshots.

"He wanted to make everyone laugh and smile and everything of that sort, and he was just a happy 16-year-old," said Small.

It is all part of a new initiative to bring justice to families and the Miami Gardens community. Johnson said he chose Louis as the first case because detectives believe that he was a good kid and an innocent victim. "The mother making the plea, it may make someone feel, who knows something to say, 'You know what, this is sad, let me make this call,'" said Johnson.

Six months have passed and Louis' family still does not have an answer, but they have hope. "I am so hopeful because I believe in the Man upstairs," said Small.

If you have any information on this case, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
