East Boston fire determined to be electrical

Posted: Updated:
EAST BOSTON (WHDH) - Twenty people are homeless and two homes have been destroyed after an electrical fire tore through East Boston Wednesday morning.

The fire started just after 8 a.m. after an electrical malfunction in the first floor of a triple decker on Sumner Street.

“The flames were just so intense and just completely consumed the entire right side of the first floor. My neighbor tried to get the hose but it was just out of control by that time,” Eddie Gomez, a resident, said.

No residents were injured in the six alarm fire but two firefighters were taken to Mass. General Hospital. One was released after treatment for a leg injury, the other remains in the hospital for head, neck and back injuries.

Neighbors say the fire could have been much, much worse.

“It’s alarming because an entire neighborhood could go up, look at what happened in the Back Bay. Thankfully there were fire walls there but that’s not the case here,” Kellie Cutter said.

The displaced residents are being helped by the Red Cross.
