BSO searching for identity thief who posed as customer

Posted: Updated:

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Deputies said they are looking for an identity thief who posed as an average customer.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said the man used a fraudulent credit card at a Tiger Direct store in Deerfield Beach. He is accused of stealing Warren Stoeber's identity. The thief used the fraudulent card to purchase clothing and a computer.

Warren Stoeber said he realized he was victimized when he started receiving credit cards in the mail that he never ordered. "We received 11 charge cards in the mail in one week, and we knew there was something wrong. In fact, stores that we never went to or shopped at, we received cards," said Stoeber.

The thief, who was caught on surveillance camera at several stores, is also wanted for racking up charges at Kohl's in Coral Springs. Stoeber said his life has been turned upside down by the crime. "I've had to make 1,000 calls. We tried to get the billing straight, but I haven't paid a dime and I'm not going to."

Stoeber is not sure how his identity was stolen, but he said the thief has charged more than $10,000 to the cards. Stoeber would like to see the thief caught. "I'm looking to get the people. I want him prosecuted. I want retribution. I think they should have to pay it back, even if it's sitting in jail, getting 50 cents a day. They should have to pay all this money back," he said.

BSO is asking for the public's help in finding out who the identity thief really is. If you have any information on this crime, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
