A severe thunderstorm storm watch is in effect until 8:00PM, with the exception of southeast Mass. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible until the early evening hours before the weather settles down and dries out overnight.
It has been quite an active day, with the headlining storm the one the produced the tornado in Revere. The National Weather Service has rated it an EF-2 with max winds of 120mph. It was on the ground for 4 minutes and produced a 2 mile long path of damage. An EF-2 is very strong by eastern Massachusetts standards, and to have one touchdown in a densely populated area such as Revere, and not have any major injuries or deaths, is amazing in itself. https://nwschat.weather.gov/p.php?pid=201407282110-KBOX-NOUS41-PNSBOX
Since 1950, it is the 163rd tornado in Massachusetts and the 1st one reported in Suffolk County since that period of record keeping began. http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/stormevents/choosedates.jsp?statefips=25%2CMASSACHUSETTS
While tornadoes are rare in eastern Massachusetts, they can happen. Essex County and Plymouth County have combined for 20 since 1950. While Suffolk County is large population-wise, it’s not all that big geographically speaking, a likely high factor for it avoiding a tornado touchdown in the past, along with it’s coastal location.
The rest of the week looks good as highs average close to 80 degrees. We do have a few days of low humidity before it turns a bit more humid by the weekend. Showers may get close to the coast, especially the Cape by Saturday, but overall the pattern is dry.
