VIDEO: News conference from Revere mayor on tornado

Posted: Updated:
Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo held a news conference following confirmation that a tornado hit the city.

Rizzo said that he can't recall in his lifetime a tornado hitting as hard as the one that caused roof collapses and downed power lines on Monday.

City Hall had to be evacuated, according to the mayor. It will likely be closed for several days.

No large scale outages have been reported. Most reports have been street by street despite many downed power lines. No serious injuries have been reported.

"Given the magnitude of the storm, it's really a miracle that no one sustained more serious injuries," said Rizzo.

Officials said they were lucky that most people had left for work by the time the storm came through.

Rizzo stated in the conference that the focus for crews are making sure all the roads are passable before giving advice on downed trees in yard. He encouraged residents to only use 911 for emergencies, such as for reporting downed power lines.

A shelter will be opened later Monday for people who can't return to their homes. Residents in Revere can head to Rumney Marsh Academy for assistance.
