Danvers teen faces charges in attack on DYS worker

BOSTON (WHDH) - Prosecutors said 15-year-old Philip Chism attacked a female DYS clinician in early June at an all-boys detention center in Dorchester.

"She found the defendant Philip Chism standing immediately in front of her, face-to-face, about a foot away, staring at her," said prosecutor Mark Zanini.

The 29-year-old victim had been using a bathroom in a staff locker room when Chism allegedly crept along a hallway in a crouched position, ready to attack her as she opened the door to leave.

"The defendant immediately wrapped his hands, both hands, around her neck and began choking her," he said.

Zanini said Chism forced her back into the bathroom and rammed her up against a wall, where she tried to scream but couldn't. The woman reportedly gasped for breath and managed to get one of Chism's hands off her neck.

"The defendant took his free right hand and started punching the victim in the head," Zanini said.

At that point, she managed to let out a louder scream and other workers intervened. Prosecutors said Chism stabbed the pencil he was carrying through the back of the clinician's shirt.

Chism was supposed to have been doing school work at a table outside of his cell, but slipped away when a guard was not attentive.

"The staff worker, again, was buried in his work on his desktop," Zanini said.

Chism was being held in Dorchester for allegedly murdering his algebra teacher, 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer, after following her into a bathroom at Danvers High School last fall.

He allegedly planned the crime, bringing a box cutter, gloves, and a ski mask to school to carry out the killing.

Wednesday afternoon Ritzer's family released a statement about the alleged attack at DYS.

"We find it unconscionable that a juvenile charged with such a heinous crime is afforded the freedom to roam the facility in which he was incarcerated, a luxury that enabled him to attack another young woman," they said.
