Tractor-trailer crashes onto Boston Common

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - A tractor-trailer driving through Boston ended up on a flight of stairs onto Boston Common after the brakes stopped working Thursday.

The driver, a man from Georgia, had gotten lost when his GPS told sent him through Beacon Hill.

A police officer helping the driver said it was a passenger in the truck that alerted him to the danger.

"At first I thought he was just getting out to make sure he cleared the corner then he started screaming ‘we’ve got no brakes, got no brakes,” Boston Police Officer Clifton Singletary said.

Singletary hopped on his motorcycle and drove down the street where he stopped traffic on Beacon Street just in time to prevent a collision with a tour trolley.

"If it wasn't for him things could have been much worse because he’s the one that alerted me that there was no brakes on the vehicle and that’s when everything went into action to prevent innocent people from getting struck,” Singletary said.

Crews spent several hours Thursday afternoon freeing the truck from the stairs. Beacon Street was closed for most of that time but is now reopened.

Police are still investigating but have not ticketed the driver or trucking company.
