Here’s what I’m wondering, is there still a United States of America?
Maybe you should wonder too.
Oh, I’ve heard the shouts that sound patriotic, but, to me, they sound empty.
Why? Let’s start with the definition of a nation: a large body of people, associated with a particular territory, that is sufficiently conscious of its unity to seek or to possess a government peculiarly its own.”
Is the U.S. a large body of people?
Yes.
With a particular territory?
Yes.
But “sufficiently conscious of its unity?”
No! Absolutely not!
Just look at our southern border, where a stream of illegal immigrants have paralyzed our government, because there is no agreement, no unity, about what to do.
Keep them all? Deport them all? Here’s all you can be sure of:
“The concern is it’s going to double again unless we deal with this,” said Republican Sen. John Cornyn from Texas.
And what are the chances Congress will deal with this? Not very high, because, like us, Congress is divided.
So our leaders congratulate themselves on passing a job training bill, which, compared to immigration, is meaningless.
“This is a great opportunity for us to show that we can get things done,” said Speaker John Boehner.
And immigration has the president paralyzed too. It looks like he can’t decide what to do, so he does nothing, except talk about taking action.
“Rather than wage another political stunt that wastes time, wastes taxpayers’ money, I’ve got a better idea. Do something,” said President Obama.
Yes, do something! But what? When there’s nothing that will unite us.
But the alternative is worse: if divided we stand, then divided we’ll fall.
