Baby boy delivered at gas station in Dorchester

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -

Jim Heffernan and his wife were on their way to Mount Auburn hospital when their son decided he didn’t want to wait.

Jim turned the car into the Shell station in Neponset Circle and delivered the newest member of his family.

“I had no time to panic. His neck was a little bit twisted so I went over and lined it up and he popped right out,” he said.

An ambulance arrived within a few minutes but Peter James had already arrived.

“He was still attached to the umbilical cord so we actually clamped the cord and allowed dad to come in and cut the cord,” an EMT said.

After making sure mom and baby were OK, the family joined EMTs in the ambulance for a ride to the hospital where they are recovering.

Jim says his son’s name might be Peter, but he’ll be nicknamed Shell.
