Mayor Walsh says parking app interferes with public space

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) -

People often say looking for an open parking spot in Boston is like a finding a needle in a haystack, but one company is trying to change that.

Haystack says their app will connect a driver looking for a spot with a driver leaving a spot, for a fee, and that will make finding parking easier, but not everyone agrees.

Mayor Marty Walsh and others have spoken out against the developer saying they are charging people a fee to use a public area.

“It’s not a piece of property where people have a right to sell it,” Mayor Walsh said. “The problem is its public space. They’re holding a spot on a public street and selling them. For all intents and purposes, it’s a private enterprise and you just can’t have that.”

But, the app's developer and CEO says they aren't selling the actual spots.

“They’re public spots, they’re the people’s spots. We’re not offering spots were offering information that neighbors can exchange with each other," he said.

People around Boston have mixed feelings when it comes to the app.

“One of the biggest reasons I don’t come to town as much as I’d like to is parking and the fact that it is so difficult,” one driver said.

Others are concerned about the cost.

“I’m not sure if I’d want to pay money to find a parking spot, but I guess it’s cheaper than getting a garage spot,” another driver said.

Haystack goes live in Boston Thursday and Mayor Walsh said he hasn’t ruled out any options to try and shut the app down, including legal action.
