Pit-bull mix abandoned at Billerica Animal Control

Posted: Updated:
BILLERICA, Mass. (WHDH) - When Billerica Animal Control Officer Maureen Ray arrived at work Friday morning she saw a desperate sight.

Someone had left their pit-bull mix tied up to the fence outside the kennel.

“This morning when I came in to work I pulled in, I looked over and there was a dog tied to the fence on this short leash.  Clearly left here, couldn’t get away and very nervous,” Ray said.

The dog is in great shape according to Ray, which makes it even more confusing why someone would apparently just abandon him.

“His nails were in good shape, his body condition is in good shape. I call him Petey because of the spot on his eye like the ‘Little Rascals,’” Ray said.

Petey has been kept in the kennel with other dogs and appears to be calm.

“It doesn’t look like he was abused, there’s no signs that he was raised for fighting or anything, he doesn’t react to the other dogs, he doesn’t mind them. He’s just nervous,” she said.

Without a chip, Ray said she knows nothing about Petey’s origins or shots.

She wants to make it clear that leaving a dog tied up is not a safe thing to do.

“Coyotes could have clearly attacked him. He could have been surrounded, he could have tried to fight them off but he couldn’t get away and they would figure that out,” Ray said.

Petey appears to be around 3-years-old, anyone with information is asked to call the Animal Control office at 978-671-0909 or leave an anonymous tip on the Billerica Police Department website.
