LOWELL, Mass. (WHDH) -

A Lowell apartment building was burned to the ground early Thursday morning killing seven people. Family members say five of the dead were related.

“Everyone escaped except them. Why?” a woman whose son and grand kids were killed said through a translator.

The man lived with his long-time girlfriend and their five kids, only two of the children survived.

The man’s brother said they had fireworks in the house to celebrate his daughter’s birthday on the Fourth of July.

“He was a cool father, every time this season like that he would take his kids out and let them have a good time,” Thearan Sak said.

At least 50 people lived in the building, most of them were able to make it out safely but none without worry.

“They picked up the children and dropped them out the window then she said someone caught the children at the bottom,” a witness said.

Five people were in the apartment where Sarah Soth lived, they were all able to escape safely thanks to her 11-year-old stepdaughter.

“I yelled to the police and then the police were like ‘hold on’ then they brought the ladder and we went down and we were all safe," the young girl said.
