Imperial Pizza closing after nearly 50 years in Brighton

Posted: Updated:

A local landmark in Brighton will soon be closing the doors after nearly 50 years in Business.

Joe Grecco said after 41 years running Imperial Pizza he’s tired.

"I make everything myself. Like meatballs, pizza dough, eggplant, lasagna, all the stuff. I don't buy anything pre-made. I want the people to eat good stuff, no junk,” he said.

Grecco was 28-years-old when he moved from Sicily to Boston and immediately started working for his uncle at Imperial, a short time later he was the owner.

"I have a lot of friends. A lot of steady customers that come here all the time and I feel bad just to tell them I'm closing,” he said.

The pizza place is located in Brighton right near St. Elizabeth’s, everyone who lives and works nearby has a story to tell.

Mairead Befpheni went on her first date with her future husband at the shop.

"The rest is history. Here we are 10 years later. We got married 3 weeks ago. I thought it would be fitting to come back to Imperial to get one last pie and one last sub,” she said.

The open sign is on, but only for a few more days. Grecco said his last day in business will be July 19.

"I love what I do. And I love the people that come here,” he said.
