Mansfield superintendent accused of plagiarizing speech

MANSFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -

Just a few weeks after commencement one superintendent is in the hot seat for a speech she gave.

Mansfield Superintendent Brenda Hodges is accused of plagiarizing the speech from an Admiral in Texas who had similar words in May.

The Mansfield School Committee met Tuesday night to discuss the incident behind closed doors and parents who spoke to 7News said they are concerned.

“If she was in school she'd be expelled. If my daughter got caught plagiarizing I’d expect her to be expelled,” one man said.

But Hodges said she didn’t plagiarize the speech; in fact she was in the Midwest last year when she saw a similar speech and she asked the presenter for permission.

“Is there some similarities? Absolutely. In hindsight what would I have done differently? I would have said ‘I heard this and I want to share some of those thoughts,'” she said.

Former Mansfield students say the turmoil has changed their perception about a day they will remember for the rest of their lives.

“She’s a professional she should be held to a higher standard and she has a reputation to uphold for the Mansfield school system,” one former student said.

After meeting for two hours the school committee said they hadn’t made a decision yet.
