Custodian found dead after hazmat situation in Plymouth

Posted: Updated:
PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) - One person died and others were hospitalized after teams responded to a hazardous material situation at the Manomet Elementary School in Plymouth, according to the State Fire Marshal.

The Department of Fire Services said the State Hazmat team responded to the school, where 53-year-old Chester Flattery, a custodian at the school, died. Whether the death was connected to work being done at the school was unknown.

The building was evacuated when emergency responders reported eye and throat irritation. Officials said they are still working inside the building to determine the chemical that was causing the issues.

“I heard that it was a carbon monoxide issue that went on. I was pretty shocked, I know a lot of the custodians that work here in the school from working in the district,” Mia Steiger said.

The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Flattery's death.
