Opening statements began Monday in the federal trial of Azamat Tazhayakov, a college buddy of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Tazhayakov is charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors said Tazhayakov and another college friend, Dias Kadyrbayev, took the backpack containing fireworks out of Tsarnaev’s room after they realized he was a suspect in the deadly attack. Those items were later found in a landfill. He is not accused of participating in the attacks or knowing about them in advance.
