Federal trial begins for bombing suspect's friend

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (AP) - A federal prosecutor has told jurors that a friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev impeded the investigation into the bombing for one reason: to help Tsarnaev.

Tazhayakov is charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors said Tazhayakov and another college friend, Dias Kadyrbayev, took the backpack containing fireworks out of Tsarnaev's room after they realized he was a suspect in the deadly attack. Those items were later found in a landfill. He is not accused of participating in the attacks or knowing about them in advance.

Tazhayakov has pleaded not guilty to obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges.

Tsarnaev is accused of placing twin bombs near the finish line of the 2013 marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 260. He is also charged in the murder of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier several days after the explosion. His trial is expected to begin in November.
