Cape residents taking firework changes in stride

HYANNIS, Mass. (WHDH) - In the summer, everything happens outdoors on Cape Cod, but this Fourth of July people might have to celebrate the holiday inside.

Most towns have chosen to postpone or cancel fireworks displays thanks to Hurricane Arthur.

There will be no fireworks over Lewis Bay in Hyannis. The fireworks are normally set off on the barge but between the issue of safely transporting them and not being able to get an alternative rain date, officials are hoping to postpone the festivities until late summer.

"It's a tough call to make because you know people are going to be disappointed, but at the same time, if it's pouring rain and it's not going to happen anyway," said Tom Lynch, town manager of Barnstable.

Local businesses though say the storm won't affect the Cape during the busy holiday weekend.

"People are still coming. They want to get away for the weekend and it's a long weekend, so I don't think the storm is going to hold people back," said Jessica Sylver of the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce.

In Falmouth, the fireworks show scheduled for Friday, July 4 will go off Sunday night.

"I think we'll go regardless and it will be a fun weekend," one woman said. "I think Sunday will be tough for people trying to go back to work."

In Nantucket and Provincetown, the fireworks shows are now on Saturday.

Most people vacationing on the Cape are taking the changes in stride.

"We're just here relaxing. Rain or shine, we'll be relaxing," one vacationer said.
