GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -
It was a summer sleepover that had a real life scare.
The District Attorney's office said a 34-year-old man broke into a tent with two little girls and threatened them with a knife.
It happened in the Bayview neighborhood of Gloucester around 5:30 Monday morning. The girls were sleeping in a tent in the backyard.
"That's unacceptable. At least he’s caught. Girls are alright. Hopefully, he gets the full extent of the law,” Richard Santos, a neighbor, said.
Neighbors said the girls were understandably quite shaken up.
According to the District Attorney, the man, who lives in the same neighborhood, wouldn't let them leave and asked the girls to give him a hug. Eventually he left and tried to steal a man's truck, which is when police caught up with him.
"I'd like to see him in jail if that's what he did. He shouldn't be here. He shouldn't be amongst people,” Fernando Silva, a neighbor, said
The man has been charged with kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. The man also failed to register as a sex offender in 2005. He is being held without bail until a dangerousness hearing.
