Police searching for arsonist after Bridgewater fire

Posted: Updated:

Fierce flames shot into the sky early Tuesday morning in Bridgewater as two vacant homes were destroyed.

Investigators said they believe the fire was started by an arsonist. They say just a few weeks ago there was a fire in one of the homes.

“There were several set fires in a few locations in the building. There was no power in the building,” Bridgewater Fire Chief George Rogers said.

Now the Bridgewater Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal are investigating and looking for signs of who may have started the blaze.

The two vacant homes were destroyed and three other buildings were damaged. Neighbors say the flames were so hot they had to be evacuated.

“I could feel the heat through the glass over here. They told us we had to get out of the house so we got out,” Ken Sharland said.

A developer reportedly had plans to knock down the homes and build a new housing complex.

"We don't have a great problem with arson fires in our area but this one obviously came about today," Rogers said.

Neighbors also say they have seen graffiti in the homes recently and think it might have been local kids.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Brockton Hospital.

A sign is posted at the scene of the crime offering a $5,000 reward for information. The State Fire Marshal's phone number is (978) 567-3100.
